AI Is Saving My Business.
It Might Be Destroying My Province.

The same technology giving rural entrepreneurs a fighting chance is the same technology threatening the coastlines, fisheries, and watersheds that define Atlantic Canada. We need to talk about both things at once.

I’m going to hold two things at once in this piece, and I’m going to ask you to do the same. The first: artificial intelligence has changed what’s possible for rural entrepreneurs, single parents, and small businesses in ways that are genuinely revolutionary. The second: the infrastructure behind that same technology poses a serious and underexamined threat to the very ecosystems that make Atlantic Canada worth fighting for. I live on the edge of both truths. I’m not willing to let go of either one.

This isn’t a piece about whether AI is good or bad. That conversation is already exhausted and mostly useless. This is a piece about who benefits, who bears the cost, and why the people in rural economies — the ones with the most to gain from AI adoption and the most to lose from data centre expansion — are almost never the ones in the room when those decisions get made.

And right now, those decisions are being made. Actively, quickly, and very close to home.

What AI Actually Does
for Rural Entrepreneurs

Let me be concrete about this, because the conversation around AI in business tends to stay abstract in ways that obscure the real story.

I am a single mother. I run a marketing strategy, web design, and brand photography business out of Nova Scotia. I do not have a team. I do not have investors. I do not have the kind of capital that lets you hire your way out of a bottleneck. For most of my career, that meant there was a hard ceiling on what I could produce — not because of the quality of my thinking, but because there are only so many hours in a day and I am one person filling the roles of strategist, designer, photographer, copywriter, account manager, and the person who also has to pick up kids and make dinner.

AI removed that ceiling. Not all the way. Not without trade-offs. But meaningfully, materially, in ways I feel every single week.

The lead magnet that used to take me a full day to research, write, and structure now takes two hours — and it’s better, because the AI compression of the research phase lets me spend more of my time on strategy and less on logistics. The marketing framework document I’m building for a client in the tourism sector, the competitive analysis for a seafood company trying to break into new markets, the content strategy for a real estate team in a small town that can’t afford an agency — all of it moves faster, goes deeper, and delivers more value because I have a tool that works at a pace I couldn’t match alone.

That’s not a small thing. That’s the difference between a rural service business that competes and one that doesn’t.

The Equity Argument
Nobody Is Making Loudly Enough

Here’s what I want policy makers and economic development organizations to understand: AI is not just a productivity tool. For rural entrepreneurs — and specifically for women, single parents, and undercapitalized founders in small markets — it is an equity tool.

The urban business owner with a team of five has always been able to produce at scale. The solo operator in a small Nova Scotia town, trying to compete for the same clients while managing everything alone, has always been at a structural disadvantage that had nothing to do with the quality of their work. AI closes that gap in a way that nothing else has.

When I can deliver the same calibre of strategy document, lead magnet, or content plan as a Toronto agency — in the same timeframe, at a price point that works for Atlantic Canadian businesses — that is economic development. That is rural retention. That is exactly the kind of thing the province says it wants to support.

And yet the conversation about AI in Atlantic Canada almost always centres on two things: the threat to jobs and the opportunity to attract data centre investment. Both of those conversations almost entirely miss the actual lived impact for the rural entrepreneurs who are quietly building something real with these tools right now.

What’s Happening
Right Next Door

While Nova Scotia’s investment attraction agency is actively marketing the province as “one of the most compelling locations for data centre investment on the North Atlantic,” the community of Lorneville, New Brunswick is living what that pitch looks like in practice.

A proposed 190-megawatt data centre in the Spruce Lake Industrial Park near Saint John — backed by Alberta-based Beacon AI Centres and Texas-based VoltaGrid — has drawn one of the most sustained community resistance campaigns Atlantic Canada has seen in years. More than 200 people showed up to a recent protest. Residents packed an open house and turned it into a town hall. The Save Lorneville movement has taken a New Brunswick cabinet minister on a hike through the forest slated for industrial conversion.

The concerns are specific and serious. The initial expansion area would infill dozens of hectares of wetlands — wetlands that environmentalists say are already under pressure and that local residents depend on for well water quality. A provincial hydrogeologist flagged in internal communications that the development could affect the community’s older wells. An on-site natural gas plant would supply about half the facility’s energy needs and, according to one estimate, would increase New Brunswick’s total greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 6.6 per cent — from a single project.

This is not a hypothetical. This is happening now, 300 kilometres from where I’m sitting, in a community that looks a lot like communities across Nova Scotia.

The pitch “Data centres bring jobs, investment, and economic diversification to rural Atlantic Canada.” — Invest Nova Scotia is actively recruiting data centre operators, marketing the province’s low costs, renewable energy, and connectivity as competitive advantages.
The reality Data centres bring relatively few permanent local jobs, consume enormous amounts of energy, and their economic benefits concentrate in ways that rarely reach the fishing families, tourism operators, and rural small businesses whose livelihoods depend on the ecological health of the land and water around them. In Lorneville, what’s being traded is wetlands, well water, and a 6.6% increase in provincial emissions — for a facility whose long-term customer hasn’t even been publicly identified.

Nova Scotia’s Grid
Is Not Ready for This

Here’s the piece of this conversation that gets buried fastest: Nova Scotia is still one of the most fossil-fuel-dependent electricity grids in Canada. In 2024, 40.5% of the province’s emissions came from electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

Invest Nova Scotia markets the province’s “renewable energy” as an attraction for data centre operators. And yes, Nova Scotia has committed to a renewable transition — but commitment and reality are moving at different speeds. The grid is improving. Slowly. The timeline of that transition and the timeline of data centre appetite for power are not synchronized.

A large-scale AI data centre running on a grid that still depends heavily on coal and natural gas is not clean infrastructure, regardless of how it’s branded. And the energy demands of AI infrastructure are not modest. The proposed Saint John facility alone would require the equivalent of nearly half the output of a new natural gas plant in the Tantramar region — a plant that was itself controversial.

Nova Scotia doesn’t have the hydro surplus that Quebec is planning to expand, or the natural gas that Alberta has to burn. What it has is a coastline, a tidal ecosystem, freshwater rivers, and a fishery that generates over a billion dollars a year. Those are the assets. And they are not infinitely resilient.

The Bay of Fundy
Is Not a Line Item

I want to say something I don’t hear enough people saying out loud in these conversations: the Nova Scotia fishery is not an externality to be weighed against economic development. It is economic development. It is culture. It is identity. It is the reason families have stayed on this coastline for generations when they could have left for somewhere easier.

The Bay of Fundy supports one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet. The lobster and snow crab fisheries are the economic backbone of entire coastal communities. Salmon rivers run through landscapes that haven’t been industrialized. These are not soft considerations — they are the foundation that everything else is built on.

When we talk about “balancing economic development with environmental concerns,” we are often implicitly treating the coastline as the soft side of that equation. The thing we’d ideally protect but will sacrifice if the numbers are right. That framing is wrong. And the communities that understand that most viscerally — the fishing families, the tourism operators, the small coastal towns — are the exact same people who are already using AI to grow their businesses and compete. They have the most to gain from AI access. They also have the most to lose from what powers it.

What I Actually Want
From This Conversation

I am not anti-AI. I use it every day. I am not even categorically anti-data centre. I understand the infrastructure has to exist somewhere, and I understand that rural communities need economic investment.

What I want is for the people making decisions about where that infrastructure goes to be in genuine conversation with the people who will live with the consequences. Not a consultation process that happens after the approvals are already in motion. Not an environmental assessment that treats wetland infill as a checkbox. A real reckoning with what we’re trading, and for whom.

I want the economic development narrative around AI in Atlantic Canada to centre the rural entrepreneur who is using these tools to build something real — not just the corporate investment that shows up in a press release. I want the equity argument to be made loudly: that AI access is not a luxury for rural small businesses, it is infrastructure, and it deserves the same policy attention as broadband or roads.

And I want us to be honest that Nova Scotia is being actively marketed as a destination for this industry right now — before the environmental frameworks, before the grid is ready, before the communities most affected have been asked.

So Where Does That
Leave Us?

I use AI every day. I will keep using it. It has changed my business and my life in ways I’m genuinely grateful for — as an entrepreneur, as a single parent, as someone who spent years at a structural disadvantage that had nothing to do with the quality of my work.

I also live in a province that is actively pitching itself to the industry whose infrastructure nearly destroyed wetlands and drinking water quality in a New Brunswick community last year — and is currently under active community resistance. I watch the tides. I know what this coastline is. I know what it would mean to lose it — not in the abstract, but in the specific, irreversible way that industrial compromise works.

I don’t have a clean resolution. I don’t think there is one. What I have is the belief that holding both things honestly — the transformative potential of AI for rural economies and the genuine environmental cost of its infrastructure — is more useful than choosing a side and performing certainty.

The question I keep coming back to is this: Invest Nova Scotia has a dedicated page recruiting data centre operators to this province right now. They’re marketing our land, our connectivity, our costs. Who decided that? Who was asked? And are the communities that will live with the consequences — the fishing families, the well-water users, the people whose livelihoods are tied to a healthy coastline — part of that conversation?

Because right now, based on what just happened in Lorneville, the answer appears to be no.
